Observations of englacial water passages: a fracture-dominated system

چکیده
To test models of the hydraulics and geometry of englacial conduits, 48 holes (3900m of ice) were drilled into Storglaciaren, Sweden, in search of conduits. About 79% of the holes intersected a hydraulically connected englacial feature. A video camera was used to examine the features and measure local water-flow rates. Because of the extremely clear ice that surrounded most features, their geometry could not be discerned. Of the remaining features, 80% (36) were fracture-like, 16% (6) were of complex geometry, and 4% (2) exhibited a conduit-like geometry. The fracture-like features exhibited steep plunges ( 708), narrow openings ( 40mm) and slow water-flow speeds ( 10mms). We argue that these fracture-like features are indeed englacial fractures of unknown origin. The depth to fractures intersection varied from near the glacier surface to 96% of local ice depth, with a maximum depth of 131m. Few hydraulically connected fractures exhibited water motion, indicating some preferential flow pathways exist. We found one ‘traditional’ englacial conduit after an intentional search in a field of moulins. These results suggest that englacial water flow is conveyed through a ubiquitous network of fractures and that conduits are relatively rare.

Structural control of englacial conduits in the temperate Matanuska Glacier, Alaska, USA
Fourteen englacial conduits were mapped within 2 km of the terminus of the temperate Matanuska Glacier, Alaska, USA, to ice depths of 65m using speleological techniques. Detailed threedimensional maps of the conduits were made over 3 years to characterize conduit relationships with glacier structural features and to track conduit evolution through time. All conduits consisted of single unbranch...
متن کاملOrigin of stratified basal ice in outlet glaciers of Vatnajökull and Öræfajökull, Iceland
During the period 2000–2005, we collected samples of englacial ice, vent water, frazil/anchor ice and stratified basal ice from warm-based outlet glaciers of Vatnajökull and Öræfajökull, Iceland, and analysed them for H, O and D. Results of H analyses show that the stratified basal ice contains H from atmospheric thermonuclear testing and is younger than the englacial ice. Results of the O and ...
متن کاملInversion of a glacier hydrology model
The subglacial hydrologic system exerts strong controls on the dynamics of the overlying ice, yet the parameters that govern the evolution of this system are not widely known or observable. To gain a better understanding of these parameters,we invert a spatially averagedmodel of subglacial hydrology from observations of ice surface velocity and outlet stream discharge at Kennicott Glacier, Wran...
متن کاملStudies of englacial water in Storglaciären using GPR - year two
This report describes the activities and preliminary findings of the second year of our project on Storglaciären during the summer of 2002. Ice penetrating radar studies were used together with borehole video and other down-hole experiments to investigate englacial water flow. The radar surveys together with the borehole experiments suggest a new model for englacial drainage, wherein crevasse-l...
متن کاملSeismic and GPR surveys of Mullins Glacier, McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica: ice thickness, internal structure and implications for surface ridge formation
We present results from ground-penetrating radar (GPR) and seismic surveys for the Mullins Valley debris-covered glacier (Mullins Glacier), Antarctica, that yield local ice-thickness estimates of 80–110m in upper Mullins Valley and 150m in upper Beacon Valley. Englacial debris in upper Mullins Glacier occurs as scattered cobbles and as discrete layers. One extensive englacial debris layer, whic...
